The Third Regiment

The Third Regiment was heavily inspired by the opera Madame Butterfly which tells the story of a young Japanese girl who marries an American soldier. It is exquisite and heartbreaking.

The collection combines the colours and tailoring of traditional Japanese attire – kimonos and so forth, with historical Westernised military uniforms.

I’m pretty excited to show you this collection… I feel like Bento is getting closer to the vision I had for it.

To see the whole collection, visit our collection page.

Everything will be available for pre-order from today, with delivery later this month.

What a Milestone!

Organic Cotton Louis V knits

This week, we cracked the four-digit milestone for Facebook fans.

To celebrate, we’re offering a variety of very special offers.

The first is that all our knits are just $120 (and come with free shipping within Australia). Use code ‘FBKNITS’ to buy (shop.thisisbento.com). That’s WHOLESALE price, people.

We have both warm and cool weather options. The winter versions are 100% merino wool. Their summer counterparts are 100% featherweight organic cotton.

Two’s Company – Spring/Summer 1112

Our new collection for Spring/Summer 2011-2012 is about to hit stores.

I often read interviews with designers about their collections and with all respect in the world for them, they often seem to go on about their inspiration and who their customer is and whatnot. I’m really not about that, so I’ll say very little on the subject.

Bento isn’t about the label, it’s about the wearer (that’s you). It’s designed to be luxurious and effortless and I hope I’ve done that goal some justice.

As always, I welcome feedback from anyone and everyone.

You can see the new collection here – Two’s Company.

A Sad Day

Good grief it’s been a tough season. Sales-wise, we’ve actually fared better than most. For us it’s been tough because we’ve had a bunch of our stockists close, and others just not pay.

I’ve written before about payment terms and whatnot, but that’s not what this post is about.

Today is a very sad day because today we’re referring our first matter of an invoice outstanding by several months with no communication to a debt collection agency which will be followed by legal action against one of our stockists. And it sucks. Lots.

Fundamentally, I don’t think it’s my role to act as the bank for the industry. I don’t have the capital or the inclination. Moreover, it’s exceptionally disappointing at a personal level that someone I trusted and respected has decided to try and screw me over. These aren’t big corporations we’re talking about. It’s two small business owners. Out there somewhere, right now, is an individual who has actively made the decision to ignore all attempts at communication and compromise and to lie to and steal from me.

But – there’s a lesson in all this. Respect and trust must be earned, not inherently given. I can’t decide if it makes me a good person that I willingly trust… or just naive. Either way, it’s clear there’s no place for it in business.

Pssst! One Day Only Offer…

For today ONLY we have a special offer to celebrate the 30th birthday of Bento designer Sam (that’s me!)

Click the ‘shop’ link above and use the code bentobirthday for 30% off everything.

But it’s only good until midnight tonight, so be quick!

Our New Online Store

We’re pretty excited here at Bento today because we’ve just joined the Grand Social fraternity and opened our very own online store alongside fancy labels like Ellery, Ginger & Smart and our buddies Limedrop.

You can check out the store here: http://www.thegrandsocial.com.au/index/bento or by clicking the ‘shop’ item in the above menu. Make sure you’ve liked us on Facebook and/or are following us on Twitter, as we’ll have a special offer for our online fans soon…

Happy Birthday, Bento

Holy moly. Today marks the very first birthday for Bento. I’m measuring this not based on how long we’ve been in stores (only about four weeks), or how long Bento has been cooking in my mind (years), but rather the date Bento was registered as a business.

This blog has acted as a documentary of the journey I’ve been on, from the day last May when I resigned from my job with a bank to pursue this crazy dream.

Rather than bleat on about all that we’ve achieved (and honestly, it doesn’t feel like much – I’m my own worst critic), I want to use this post to thank all the people that got me (us) this far…

First, and most importantly, my husband – Charles Hardman who is now on his own journey opening a gallery for emerging artists (www.100thgallery.com). Thanks for holding my hand and not laughing hysterically the day I told you what I wanted to do. I couldn’t have got this far without you.

In very rough chronological order…

Maximilian, my teacher at the crash course I took at CAE on the fashion industry. With everything you knew about what I was going to try and do, you were supportive and never tried to talk me out of it. A thousand thanks.

Roula from Canon Fashions, Adrian from A&B Knitwear / Merino Gold, Josh from Davisha, Julia at Galleria Tessuti and Katya at MTA… you all had faith in me when others didn’t and were prepared to talk to me. There aren’t words that can adequately describe how grateful I was to be able to do business with you.

Along the same vein, but a little later along – Sean from Vince Clothing, Tamara at Martin & Savage, Sam from Richmond Laundry and Geetha at Bradmill. Your advice came at just the right time and was invaluable.

The modelling agencies I’ve worked with – Vivien’s, Giant and Mark Fitzgerald Management – you’ve all been spectacular in your own way and I hope to work with all of you again in the future. A special shout out really should go to JJ and Silvana from Vivien’s though – not only are you both breathtakingly beautiful, you were so wonderful, so professional and made the day so easy for me when we shot the first collection. I can’t rave about you enough.

Julia from The Sample Room - thanks for rescuing me when things weren’t going quite according to plan!

I would have given up a long time ago if it weren’t for the assistance and guidance of some amazing people I’ve met along the way – Lou Pardi… who took me to a party and introduced me to Cheryl at Business Chic and Sarah from Style Melbourne who in turn took me to meet Tanya and Daniel at Fashionising and Phoebe from Lady Melbourne. You all rock.

Whilst I’m inadvertantly on the topic of bloggers… a gazillion thanks to those who’ve taken the time to write about Bento or even just talk to me. I pour my heart and soul into this little label and your kind words are often what gets me through the day. The Agenda, Broadsheet, Style FarmSmall Lust, Style Lab, What Would Karl DoSassybella, Style Wilderness, Style Platform, Love More, Nothing to Nobody, Friend in Fashion… and my sincere apologies if I’ve forgotten people from this list! :(

The journalists who didn’t just ignore me because I didn’t have a PR agent – Janice Breen Burns from The Age, James Boston from ATF, Assia at Ragtrader, Rebecca Whish from Cleo, Lou from Peppermint, Jess from Bespoke, Kealey at Thelma and the fantabulous team at Onya - thanks.

The ever talented and wonderful photographers Emily Abay and Caitlin Jane McColl, makeup artists Merton Muaremi, Tanya Guiccione and Briony at Adorn and finally Matthew Botakis for his follicular based fabulousness. We love you all!

And finally – chronologically speaking – my first season stockists. Sarah at The Dreamery, the eponymous Cecylia, Bel at The Dressing Room, Kamahl at Horse With No Name and the delightful Thread Den I will forever remember the chance you took on me. You have each changed my life.

On a somewhat simliar note… although they don’t stock Bento, Elise at The Corner Shop and Victoria at Alice Euphemia. Your honestly and advice are completely unique in this industry. Thanks so very much!

Finally – not chronologically this time – to everyone who has treated me with disdain, seriously confused the line between ‘constructive criticism’ and ‘just plain rude’ and has been otherwise discouraging, unsupportive and unprofessional… SCREW YOU. You know who you are.

Thanks again to everyone for getting us (me) to Bento’s first birthday! We look forward to sharing many more with you :)

Get Thee Some Bento

In case you haven’t heard, today we’re enjoying the biggest milestone of all… our first delivery to a physical store!

This morning, Cecylia on High Street in Armadale takes delivery of black Sophie skirts, check Maxwell jackets, and every shade of Hannah blouse (except the navy).

Can’t remember what these look like? Here are some pics to remind you…

Now, without bragging, there are an EXTREMELY limited number of these available. If you think you might like a piece from the collection, don’t delay… get yourself to Cecylia or give them a call (they will post your purchases to you) – +61 3 9822 0009.

Personally, I view these as a piece of history…. not just my personal history, but when I think of some of the clothing labels I really admire and love to wear, I’d really treasure a first-season piece. In this case, they’re designed to last so you know you’ll get to treasure it for quite a while, too.

An Enormous Milestone – Bento Preorders Available Online

Ladies and gents… this blog was started in May last year, on the day I announced my resignation from the bank to pursue a crazy dream of running my own fashion label.

Today, 8 months later, we have a huge milestone… our exclusive online stockist (The Dreamery) starts taking preorders. You can get your eyes on it here: http://www.the-dreamery.com/Designers/Bento

If you want to be one of the few lucky people to own a first-season Bento piece, now’s your chance. They won’t be remade so what we have is what we have.

And without bragging, I suggest you don’t delay, because several stockists already have a waitlist for some items.

A huge thanks to all those who have helped me get this far. May this be only the beginning of sensational things to come.

The Missing Piece

I mentioned before that our second collection – Two’s Company, for Spring/Summer 2011 – 2012 has 12 styles. Well… here’s the last style. A silk blouse.

You may recognise this blouse from our first season. Well, it’s very similar but has a couple of important changes:

  1. The buttons are vintage! I love working with vintage. It has such a great impact on the environment in that they were produced many years ago and minimise waste today.
  2. The fabric. Last season this was produced in a rather delightful Italian stretch silk. For the warmer months, we’ve done it in a Spanish silk habotai. Think of a cross between a silk shirt and a cotton shirt. Very lightweight with a slight sheen, but some of the ‘starchiness’ you get with cotton.

Anyway… I hope you like it :)
