Two’s Company – Spring/Summer 1112

Our new collection for Spring/Summer 2011-2012 is about to hit stores.

I often read interviews with designers about their collections and with all respect in the world for them, they often seem to go on about their inspiration and who their customer is and whatnot. I’m really not about that, so I’ll say very little on the subject.

Bento isn’t about the label, it’s about the wearer (that’s you). It’s designed to be luxurious and effortless and I hope I’ve done that goal some justice.

As always, I welcome feedback from anyone and everyone.

You can see the new collection here – Two’s Company.

The Uniform

Do you have a uniform? Not a work uniform, silly. I mean a failsafe go-to look. Open your wardrobe – is it mostly denim? Sun dresses or suits?

I rather admire people who have a personalised uniform. Often it seems many fashion folk consider a ‘uniform’ for a civilian to be for someone who doesn’t have much imagination, or is just not fashionable enough to be aware of trends.

The glorious thing about a uniform however, is that you can safely buy things on sale. You can “invest” in expensive pieces and know that you’ll wear them for the next ten years because they’re part of your uniform.

Have a think about the people who you find to be incredibly stylish. In most cases, you’ll notice they actually have a uniform… it may not be a particular style, such as gypset or what-have-you, but they’ll almost definitely dress with a common theme. All it really amounts to after all, is knowing what suits you. Adopting trends that flatter (not ones you just fancy) and ignoring those which don’t.

Even if you’re reading this and saying to yourself that you don’t have a uniform, I’m prepared to bet you do… or that you’re at least a good way towards identifying one. Do you find yourself continually buying the same sort of items? Or that you wear 20% of your wardrobe 80% of the time? These pieces are the foundation of your uniform.

What do you think of the uniform? Boring, or effortless style? And what is your failsafe go-to look?

I Really Like Your Foundation…

We’ve been pondering the idea of clothing compliments recently. One of our stockists has a theory that you get more compliments on an item that has a print (although our research shows these are the first items you grow tired of too).

Now one of the key principles behind Bento is that our pieces are made to last – in terms of quality, but also style. They are the backbone of your wardrobe. You know, those things that you actually bother to take to the tailor, fit perfectly, wash/dryclean carefully, have them forever and go with everything. With this in mind, the styles need to be effortless and timeless. Think Audrey Hepburn’s infamous Breakfast At Tiffany’s black frock that virtually any woman would give her entire wardrobe to own.

If you draw an analogy with makeup, Bento is foundation. Beautiful foundation that wears well and is the perfect shade doesn’t date. In an ideal world however, no one should even know you’re wearing foundation. So seamless, flawless and glowing you appear it just seems that you’re radiant with health and good genes.

We’ve heard it said that to remark that you like a person’s attire is a slightly backhanded compliment. After all, doesn’t such a statement indicate the item itself is wearing the person rather than the other way around? Likewise, to say you really like a woman’s foundation would be to suggest that it’s noticeable. A far more serious compliment would be to simply say they look amazing. Or that they have great style.

So do you really want someone to say they like the staple items in your wardrobe? Or should they just exist to make you look good?

A Picture Of Proximity… Unveiling Our New Icon

We’ve been banging on for some time now about how Bento has created a very geographically tight supply chain. The specifics vary for each garment and style, but without fail every piece we put our name on is made within 10km of our studio. Whilst I was hunting down the various suppliers and manufacturers required to make this happen, I was surprised and delighted to discover other Australian designer labels use these locals too.

Today we’re unveiling a new icon that will appear from next season onwards on our swing tags so that people can see just how close by our garments are made. And here it is…

Ideally though, we’d like to see this become more widespread than just Bento. So here’s our offer. This artwork is available to anyone in the fashion industry who wishes to use it. You can change the number and the colour of the icon, but nothing else (otherwise it wouldn’t be very consistent now, would it?).

So, funny story… I enjoy styling, but I’m not particularly good at it. Case in point, I gave Anna the wrong size blouse. Didn’t even notice until the shots were all finished!

The Bento Fairy Tale…

You may remember a little while ago we did a special shoot just for our online friends and fans. Today we have some more photos from that shoot featuring our AW 2011 collection, Volume One.

The theme was around fairy tales and stories from our youth.

These ones were inspired by Alice in Wonderland…

Carolina Herrera Wears Bento

Well, okay not quite… but I was flipping through our copy of The Sartorialist (Scott Schuman)’s book over the weekend and was struck by the similarity of this photo taken by him:

Carolina Herrera in Central Park - shot by The Sartorialist

and this one, from our AW11 lookbook…

Bento Black 'Sophie' Skirt - AW11

Carolina Herrera is often regarded as a style icon (and rightly so). I absolutely love this shot, as it reinforces my belief about a few things:

1. That skirt is timeless. Can you guess when the shot of Carolina was taken?
2. You don’t have to have a body and legs like the exquisite JJ to make it work. I’ve never seen Carolina in real life, but I’m guessing she’s shorter than the 6 foot 3 inches JJ was in those heels. And probably larger than her size-6-Australian-at-most frame. Tell me they don’t look equally amazing.

At the risk of sneaking a gratuitous plug into a blog post… there aren’t many of these skirts left. If you want one, I suggest you hurry up and get yourself to a stockist, or put in a phone call soon – really soon!

Yet Another Side To Bento

We’re completely flat out at the moment working on sales for our second season (Spring/Summer 2011). To entertain you in the meantime I thought I’d post this little pic of the brains behind Bento at L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Bento, Interpreted

Bento friend, stylist and all-round glamour girl Jess Dempsey recently held a shoot that included some Bento. We just love how the look turned out… So much colour!

Bento On The Catwalk

A few weeks back, Bento made it’s debut on the catwalk in a trunk show with a range of labels from all over the world stocked by one of our stores, Cecylia.

For those who didn’t make it, a few pictures which we’ve shamelessly stolen from our friends at Style Melbourne are below. You can see their full coverage of the night, here: http://stylemelbourne.com/2011/03/cecylia-aw-2011-showcase/

But otherwise, the most important parts (ie. the looks that contained some Bento)…
